The second objective was to examine gender differences in these effects. METHODS Following induction of negative body image, 102 university undergraduates were randomly assigned to one of three experimental conditions-distraction, concrete rumination or abstract rumination. However, the proportion of highly dependent mobile phone users was more elevated in Belgium, UK, and France. Regression analysis identified several risk factors for increased scores on the PMPUQ dependence subscale, namely using mobile phones daily, being female, engaging in social networking, playing video games, shopping and viewing TV shows through the Internet, chatting and messaging, and using mobile phones for downloading-related activities. Body dissatisfaction and strategies to control weight during pregnancy can have many consequences for both the mother and baby. Excessive weight gain may cause complications during childbirth and, reciprocally, a too weak weight gain could be associated with the risk of having a baby with a very low birth weight. Thus, it appears important to have a tool to detect these body image disorders in this population. As far as we know, no French-speaking tool exists, and the objective of this study was to investigate the psychometric properties of the French translation of the Pregnancy and Weight Gain Attitude Scale (PWGAS), which assesses the attitudes about weight gain during pregnancy. METHOD The sample consisted of 553 women (29.32$pm$4.82 years) in their third trimester of pregnancy. Participants were volunteer women recruited in hospitals during obstetric consultation. All participants completed an anamnestic questionnaire, the PWGAS and a questionnaire assessing body dissatisfaction (Body Shape Questionnaire [BSQ]). The PWGAS, in its original version, includes 18 items and consists of four subscales: Positive Pregnancy Body Image; Negative Pregnancy Body Image; Indifference toward Weight Gain and Weight Gain Restrictive Behaviors. The instrument was translated and verified by expert translators. RESULTS Confirmatory factor analysis of the original version showed fit indices below recommended limits. An exploratory factor analysis on the PWGAS revealed the existence of five factors: textquotedblFear about weight gaintextquotedbl (4 items); textquotedblAbsence of weight gain preoccupationtextquotedbl (2 items); textquotedblPositive attitudes about weight gaintextquotedbl (4 items); textquotedblFeeling overwhelmed by weight gaintextquotedbl (3 items); and textquotedblControl over weight gaintextquotedbl (3 items). AbstractObjective The objective of this study is to evaluate the relationship between social anxiety and satisfaction of needs for autonomy, competence and relatedness in obese adolescents. Literature review reports that obese children and adolescents have higher social anxiety that their normal weight peers. But relations between obesity and social anxiety are not clear. We explore the relationship between social anxiety and satisfaction of needs for autonomy, competence and relatedness, three basic psychological needs advanced by Self-Determination Theory (SDT). SDT predicts that satisfaction of these needs should result in well-being and mental health. Thereby, a low satisfaction of the needs for autonomy, competence and relatedness is associated with psychopathology. These psychological needs are not yet explored in obese adolescents. We expect that obese adolescents have higher social anxiety and lower satisfaction of the needs for autonomy, competence and relatedness as compared to controls. Furthermore, high social anxiety could be associated with low satisfaction of these needs. Methods The study sample consists of a clinical group of 17 obese adolescents and a control group of 67 normal weight adolescents. They completed self-report questionnaires. Social anxiety was assessed with the Fear of Negative Evaluation Scale (FNE). Satisfaction of the needs for autonomy, competence and relatedness was measured with the Perceived Autonomy in Life Domains Scale (PALDS), the Perception of Competence in Life Domains Scale (PCLDS) and the Interpersonal Relationship Quality Scale (EQRI). Results Obese adolescents have significantly lower satisfaction of needs for autonomy and competence in leisure domain as compared to controls. Social anxiety is negatively correlated with satisfaction of needs for autonomy and competence in interpersonal relationships domain, general competence and relatedness with friends. Conclusions Physical complications in obese adolescents could explain dissatisfaction of needs for autonomy and competence in leisure domain. This assumption could be explored in future research. Results should improve treatment of obese adolescents. Consistent with SDT, satisfaction of the needs for autonomy, competence and relatedness is linked with social anxiety. SummaryObjective Memory bias for weight and shape related words was investigated in 42 young women university students. According to the eating disorders cognitive model proposed by Vitousek and Hollon, 1990 [3], women suffering from eating disorder develop self-schemas about weight and shape considered to be at the core of eating disorder pathology. Self-schemas about weight and shape appear to bias information processing with a confirmatory objective. Cognitive biases for congruent information, such as memory bias for negative information about weight and shape, are believed to be implicated in the development and maintenance of eating disorders (Williamson et al., 1999) [4]. The literature supports this cognitive model in clinical samples, with women suffering of anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa or binge eating disorder (McNally, 2001; King et al., 1991) [5,6]. Results, however, are inconsistent in non-clinical samples or women with subclinical eating disorders (Hunt and Cooper, 2001; Israeli and Stewart, 2001) [10,11]. These inconsistencies could be linked to the use of different methodologies to evaluate memory bias or the lack of pre-test methods for experimental material. Taking into account suggestions from previous researcher in this field, the objective of this study was to investigate whether a non-clinical sample of women with eating disorder or high body dissatisfaction demonstrate a memory bias congruent with their concerns. Method Participants (n = 42) were invited to view target and control words, i.e., positive, negative and neutral words related to weight and shape and positive, negative and neutral words not related to weight and shape. They performed a self-referent encoding task during the exposition to words and recall memory was subsequently assessed. Self-report measures were taken in order to evaluate body dissatisfaction and eating behaviour. Results Non-parametric statistical analysis indicated that all women demonstrated a memory bias to weight and shape related words compared to control words. An exploratory factor analysis highlighted a three factors model gathered together 18 of the 21 items. Those three factors correspond to the three subscales from initial VCOPAS version: negative comments related to weight and shape (NWS); positive comments related to weight and shape (PWS); and positive comments related to general appearance (PGA). These ones demonstrated good internal consistency and test—retest reliability (textgreater .70). Significant correlations were found between two VCOPAS subscales and body dissatisfaction. Nevertheless and contrary to the initial version, no correlation was found between PGA subscale and body dissatisfaction.
